The Putnam Competition

The Putnam examination is a six hour mathematical competition for undergraduate college students in the United States and Canada that takes place annually in December. Every math student should try to take it, since it is free and getting a good score results in a cash reward.

The format of the test is twelve questions, divided into two sets of six questions each. Three hours will be given for each of the two set of questions, with a lunch break in between. The math department in the last two years has paid for lunch.

The next Putnam will take place on Saturday, December 6th, 2008. For students who can't take it on the date and time that it is offered, arrangements can be made to accommodate your needs, and in fact such arrangements are frequently made for students with religious obligations.

If you are interested and/or have questions, please contact your math department. If you are a Queens College student, the person to contact is Dr. William Emerson, who is a faculty member of the Queens College math department.

Putnam study sessions headed by a professor can be created if there is sufficient interest. Please e-mail us to show such interest.

Requirements

The Putnam exam is not open to students who have graduated from college. A student can only take the Putnam four times in total.
